"Broadway", the central row of cells in Alcatraz. The area at the far side is called "New York Square", with a small clock mounted on the wall above it. The dining hall adjoins this, where up to 200 deranged prisoners armed themselves with metal knives and viciously attacked their chicken and chips (actually, fruit and cereal, according to a sample menu left behind). There was a single instance of a near-revolt in the dining hall because prisoners got fed-up of their endlessly repeating menu and started overturning tables in protest. Apparently the prison officers decided to be kind and not activate the cyanide gas-pipes in the ceiling (no joke) which would have killed two of their own anyhow, and instead went in and blew a few windows out with their tommy guns. For some reason, the prisoners became, according to the audio recorded virtual tour anyhow, "tame as sheep" after this.
