alcatraz, taken from inside a "cable car". The cable cars in San Francisco look like street trams on rails. The cable actually runs under the road, and the trams snag it everytime the driver engages it with a lever. Another lever controls brakes. It was a wonder watching our driver alternately freewheeling us along, and hitching us up hills. The sheer drop you see before the tram is a hill. I haven't got any more pictures of the hills that make up most of San Francisco, but by God, they are awe inspiring. And bloody !@@$ing tiring to climb. :)
